  1. Looking out the window from my balcony to see the Cook family posing for a family portrait on the deck. The evening sun cast a golden light on them, and it made my heart soar to see them together, happy, and growing with baby Lily in their arms. Sweet.

  2. the sun has been below the horizon for hours... four valiant warriors compete... the beach has been empty for quite some time... 9:15pm rolls around... the last round of long-distance ladderball has been declared... 11 shots are taken... none of them stick... it is so dark outside that one could not even see the white piping... the only way to know was to cup your ears and listen for a clickety-clack... the 12th shot... the last shot... comes down to ben... he takes a deep breath... gives a mighty heave... silence befalls the warriors... only the subtle breeze casts a sound... we wait... we hear nothing... our hearts begin to sink... and out of nowhere... CLACK! the warriors storm the rack, sprinting down the sand... they arrive panting upon the ladder to see if the unthinkable had occured... eyes search the top ladder... the second... and glance at the third... and nothing... silent disappointment... and then one calls out, "LOOK!"... a finger points to the lowest, furthest corner of the rack... and strung there is on rope of green balls! the four scream. they celebrate. they embrace. it has been done. benjamin ryburn is the long-distance ladderball king once more!
